Last day at Caernarfon Magistrates Court

Winston Roddick QC had the final word on a historical day in Caernarfon as the Magistrate court was held for the last time at its present location on Friday May 1st.

Mr Roddick took at light hearted look at the history of the court at Caernarfon and explained that the first case was heard in 1864 and over the years it has evolved to what it is today, the most bilingual court in UK history.

During his talk Mr Roddick produced the Scales of Justice which had recently fallen from the statue on top of the building and had survived the fall without damage. He turned towards some of the Town Councillors present and asked them to make it their goal to ensure that Gwynedd Council replaced the scales on the monument.

Barrister Wyn Lloyd Jones gave a short speech and regarded the day as the end of an era. He went on to say that he hoped the building could go on toe serve the community in a positive way.

Heriage Centre

The building is now up for sale and would be a perfect location for a Heritage Centre.

Caernarfon Online understands that discussions are ongoing about setting up a Heritage Centre/Museum behind the Harbour Trust Office in St Helen's Road. But most locas feel it would make more sense to locate it at the old courts.

The new court will be opened next week at the site of the old Segontium School in Llanberis Road.
