The Caernarfon Karate Club has been established at Ysgol Yr Hendre for many years and has been successful in teaching the art of Shukokai to students of all ages .
The club is run on a not for profit basis and promises low fees and there are absolutely no direct debits or contracts to sign.
Local instructors throughout the area have been alarmed at news that some clubs or academy's charge around £60 per month for the privilege of learning karate. Gareth Edwards who holds a 5th Dan in Shukokai is chief instructor for North Wales' section of the United Kingdom All Styles Karate Organisation. (this being the largest group of its kind in the UK)
He spoke to CaernarfonOnline and explained:
"Over the years we have received numerous phone calls asking how much karate should cost and that they felt they were being charged too much by their current club. Some telling us that they were being charged over £50 to £60 per month! This to me is totally unacceptable".
"Karate, football, rugby, swimming etc should all be available at a price that everyone can afford. "
"Having two children from one family train would mean them paying over £100 per month just on karate and in this day and age, this is totally unacceptable."
"If people look around then they will realise that not all clubs charge these crippling prices. We teach children and adults of all ages and pride ourselves on the high standard of our students".
"Each lesson lasts 11/2 hours and consist of around 20 to 30 mins warm up folowed by one whole hour of karate training. All this for only £3.50!
I don't believe in charging people for lessons when they are on holiday or can't turn up through illness. You simply pay on the lesson and can gauge how much you want to train or spend each week. No contracts, no direct debits, just good clean, high quality karate training."
He went on to say, " If you are currently paying £50 plus each month then I urge you to come and see us at Ysgol Yr Hendre, you will be amazed at the standard of our students and how cost effective karate should be."
The club trains at Ysgol Yr Hendre every Tuesday 6.30 -8pm and Friday 6pm - 7.30pm.
The group also has a new club opening at Ysgol Maesincla every Monday 6pm -7.30pm (once the schools start back).
