I'r Eithaf - To the Extreme

Students of Zanshin Karate who train at Ysgol Yr Hendre and Ysgol Maesincla in Caernarfon were chosen to film for a new S4C production series "I'r Eithaf." The new children's show is due to be aired in March and shows the club doing different things at Ysgol Yr Hendre.

Tudur Phillips who presents Planed Plant met the youngsters as they were took through their paces by Gareth Edwards 5th Dan Shukokai and head of the North Wales section of U.K.S.A.K.O.

As well as showing their martial arts skills, the kids were asked to take part in experiments and show of their "hidden talents" for the show.

Instructor Gareth Edwards said. "I was very proud of our junior members today as they showed that learning karate can be fun despite it being a disciplined art. For far too long now people have been put of joining local clubs because of fears of high marked up prices and tied down to direct debit contracts. Here at Ysgol Yr Hendre and Maesincla we make sure this is not so with instructors doing the work on a voluntary basis." Caernarfon is very lucky to have a good selection of Karate Clubs including my own Zanshin Karate. A good friend of mine Gwyn Mowle trains in another style and group but nevertheless has a great club called Seki Ryu Zan and they too teach on a voluntary basis and do not charge big fees.

Zanshin Karate train three times a week at Ysgol Maesincla 6pm -7.30pm and Ysgol Yr Hendre Tuesday 6.30pm - 8pm and Friday 6pm -7.30pm. They have many events arranged over the year with a sponsored tug of war event, five a side football, a trip to The Marital Arts Show in Birmingham and a tour of Old Trafford in summer.
