Job cuts in Caernarfon as TV company and Chinese restaurants closes

Llanelli-based Tinopolis who are an independent television company with a base in Caernarfon has announced that it is to close its offices in town  with a further cut of 38 jobs in Wales. Re Branding of two welsh TV programs Wedi 3 and Wedi 7 means cutbacks are inevitable. although it is thought that some Caernarfon staff may be redeployed or offered home base work.

Caernarfon-based reporters Meinir Gwilym and Gerallt Pennant have been advised that their contracts will cease at the end of February. Eight people are currently employed at their office at Galeri Victoria Dock Caernarfon and signs are not good that they will all be relocated.

S4C's Ian Jones said the channel was confident the programmes would cover the whole of Wales and the views of people from all over the country.

The news comes as the town's business sector has suffered over the last week with news that two Chinese restaurants have ceased trading in the middle of the town and another relocating to an existing chip shop a short distance fro the centre offering both traditional fish and chips as well as Chinese cuisine on the same premises. This means more competition for esisting fish and chip shops who only offer traditional meals.

Caernarfon Online says:

Caernarfon now has two fish and chip shops offering English and Chinese take away as well as SEVEN traditional fish and chip shops. Having said this the town now only has one Chinese sit down restaurant. One chip shop is already on the market to be sold.

It has always been said that competition is good for consumers, but as always when the market is flooded with the same kind of businesses, some will inevitably lose out. Let's hope this will not be the demise of businesses already established in town.
