THEATR BARA CAWS.

Theatr Bara Caws is a professional Welsh Community Theatre Company, working through the medium of Welsh, based in Caernarfon, North Wales.  It was established in l977 and is, at present, the only company in Gwynedd which offers productions conceived and performed specifically for community audiences.

Theatr Bara Caws is a co-operative company which has four permanent company members: one administrator, two technical staff and an artistic director.  The company is run by the four members, supported by Directors/Trustees.  It is funded by The Welsh Arts Council, Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy County Councils, and a number of Community councils. Bara Caws has been registered as a charity since l977. Although Bara Caws' primary commitment is in Gwynedd, it tours frequently all over Wales, performing in village halls, community centres, schools, pubs and clubs, taking theatre to rural areas largely deprived of live professional theatre.

Performances are offered for a fee to any organisation/society who wish to invite Bara Caws to their area.  it is then the responsibility of representatives of these societies to organise the performance, booking a satisfactory venue and distributing tickets and advertisements previously prepared by the company.  We feel that as the organiser is much more familiar with his/her area, se/she is therefore able to act as an intermediary between Bara Caws and the community, and in this way we are able to maintain a close and strong relationship with each area so that we can work together to ensure the success of every performance.

In addition, Bara Caws supports the community by lending out equipment and costumes, and offering practical advice to local organisations which require help with their own production or event, and also by offering the opportunity for students and school pupils to gain work experience with the company. The company stages an average of three productions each year, attracting a high audience figure. All projects derive from original ideas and discussions within the company, which are then scripted by a commissioned author.  The company keeps a close contact with the author through every stage of the projects' development.

Bara Caws' aim and policy is to provide Welsh language theatre for Welsh speaking communities throughout Wales, especially people in rural areas who rarely see work by professional theatre companies, and to perform new and exciting work to as wide a cross-section of the community as possible, within their own community venues, encouraging them, through the medium of theatre to look at and understand local and national issues from the perspective of their own environment, and to recognise the differing influences that shape our lives.  Through the medium of theatre we are able to create atmosphere, characters and situations, through which we can explore our surroundings, as we believe that the material for such a learning process must be entertaining, as well as stimulating, challenging and informative.
