Llanbeblig Churchyard the facts at last!
The town council has received correspondence from the Rector of Llanbeblig to say that the old corporation or the old borough council accepted responsibility for maintaining part of the churchyard. This goes back to 1928, but had been forgotten about. In 1974 Arfon Borough Council was established and took over the property services and responsibilities of the old Caernarfon Borough Council, soon after they cleared the area around the Church, levelled the gravestones and landscaped the grounds. The newly established Royal Town Council was not involved. In the mid 1980s a project by the Manpower Services Commission employed 20 men to thoroughly clear the churchyard, which meant that long lost graves which had been inaccessible for years were now visible, in particular to local historians. Since then the churchyard has reverted to a weed and bramble infested jungle, and has become a playground for vandals and substance misuse. In 1995 Arfon Borough Council was finished, and all its property, services and responsibilities were transferred to Gwynedd Council. None were transferred to the Royal Town Council. In a recent meeting the Town Council did not discuss the Rector’s letter but decided instead to recommend that it be send to Gwynedd Council for their consideration. The Town Council already gives £1,000 a year towards the upkeep of the churchyard, but this is a donation only.
Now that's how it stands, we now know for sure that the town council are not responsible. It seems that it is either the Church of Wales or Gwynedd council. What does all this mean? Well in my book it means simply that the work still remians undone. We are still looking for volunteers to help out. By the end of this week we may have more news for you, watch this space! G.
