Westlife– Biography

This page will be updated with photos from the concert as it happens, check back for updates

In the mid 1990’s in Silgo, Ireland, three young men decided to form a band following their success in a school musical. They were Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan. They called the band 6 as 1, but later changed the name to I.O. YOU.

They contacted Boyzone’s manager Louis Walsh in the hope of persuading him to sign them up. Interested, but without time to look after another band, Walsh contacted Ronan Keating of Boyzone who took up the challenge to co-manage I.O. YOU with Walsh. There was some re-arrangement of band members, some leaving, others joining, including Nicky Byrne and Bryan McFadden, and so, seven years ago in 1998 Westlife –was formed.

They rapidly developed a strong reputation and fan-base, progressing from supporting the Backstreet Boys in Dublin, to touring the UK and Ireland with Boyzone to winning ‘Best New Tour Act’ at the Smash Hits Awards in November 1998. In April 1999 they released their first single Swear it Again which went straight to the top of the British and Irish charts, becoming the biggest selling debut single ever in Ireland. To date, Westlife have released eighteen singles in the UK - a massive thirteen of which have been number one hits! Their debut album was released in November 1999 and achieved triple platinum status. The group went on to sweep the board in music awards with their subsequent tours, singles and albums.

In March 2004 Bryan McFadden announced his departure from the band. Undeterred, the now four piece band continued to write, perform and record, their latest album Face to Face was released in November 2005  and became their 7th number 1 album in the UK in as many years.
